So, how do you guys handle backups? Do you use time-machine? Rsync? Ditto? Anything else? I made an automator application and put it inside my external hard drive, and every time I plug it in I just double click on the application and it backs up my data. After you get used to using it, it is actually really handy, especially compared to "ditto," because it will merely add new files, and not actually copy and paste as ditto does. So I did a little research, and was chatting with a friend when he told me about rsync. The hourly backups of Time Machine are excessive to me. I also wanted to preserve a lot of that extra space for movies and shit. However, when I used Time Machine, I was kind of blown away by how wasteful it is with space, and despite the fact that I can see how having a local "snapshot" of your computer would be handy, I found that it was too much of a waste of space for my needs.Īll I really wanted was a place to store a backup of my school documents, my pictures, and all my music, as well as other miscellaneous stuff. I got an external hard drive for Xmas this year, and I was initially excited to use Time Machine and have backups of all my stuff, as well as a place to store tons of movies!
